Rushmoor

Borough and non-metropolitan district in Hampshire, England

About

Rushmoor is a local government district with borough status in north-eastern Hampshire, England. It covers the adjoining towns of Aldershot and Farnborough, together with their suburbs and the military estate of Aldershot Garrison. The borough council is based in Farnborough. Rushmoor covers 39.0 km2 (15.1 sq mi), making it one of the smaller English districts by area, and forms a densely settled part of the Blackwater Valley urban area. Its neighbouring districts are Hart to the north and west, Surrey Heath to the east, and the Surrey boroughs of Guildford and Waverley to the south-east and south.

The modern borough has been shaped by two nationally significant concentrations of activity. Aldershot developed rapidly after the establishment of a permanent British Army camp in 1854 and became known as the "Home of the British Army". Farnborough became a centre of ballooning, aircraft development and government aeronautical research; in 1908 Samuel Franklin Cody made the first officially recognised sustained and controlled powered aeroplane flight in Britain there. The former Royal Aircraft Establishment site, Farnborough Airport, the Farnborough International Airshow, Cody Technology Park and associated defence, aerospace and digital businesses continue this technological specialism.
