Principality of Catalonia
State in Iberia (1173–1714)
About
The Principality of Catalonia was a medieval and early modern state in the northeastern Iberian Peninsula. For most of its existence it was in personal union with the Kingdom of Aragon and other states, constituting together the composite monarchy known as the Crown of Aragon. It was bordered by the Kingdom of Aragon to the west, the Kingdom of Valencia to the south, the Kingdom of France to the north and by the Mediterranean Sea to the east. Its sovereign or prince had the title of Count of Barcelona. Established in the second half of the 12th century as a result of the territorial, legislative and institutional evolution of the County of Barcelona, it ceased to exist as an independent political entity after the pro-Habsburg defeat of 1714 in the War of the Spanish Succession and the subsequent suppression of the Catalan institutional system by the Nueva Planta Decree of 1716. However, it remained as a territorial division until 1833. Today, the term Principat ("Principality") is used primarily to refer to the autonomous community of Catalonia in Spain, as distinct from the other Catalan Countries.
