First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry

Unit of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard

About

The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry, also known as the First City Troop, is a troop-sized unit of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. One of the oldest American military units still in active service, the troop is also one of the United States Army's most decorated units. The troop operates under a number of principles of self-governance unique in the U.S. military, including the election of unit members, the intentional foregoing of pay, the practice of equestrianism, and recruiting from veterans who saw active service and civilians. The First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry is the only U.S. military unit that owns its own armory building, built with private funds in Philadelphia's Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. As of November 2017, the troop had 46 active members, up from 35 in 2014.
