The island consists of two municipalities: José Santos Guardiola in the east and Roatán in the west (the latter includes Cayos Cochinos, pair of small islands halfway to the mainland). The special economic zone of Próspera is also on the west side. The island was formerly known in English as Ruatan and Rattan.
